How to Motivate Yourself to Workout from Home (or anywhere!)

Do you want to work out regularly but struggle with motivation?  It can be challenging, especially when you're exercising at home and don't have the accountability of the gym to keep you going.  


But it doesn't have to be hard.  There are many ways to change our mindset to make working out regularly not only doable but easy to incorporate into our daily habits.

Here are seven tips for exercising at home (or anywhere!) and motivating yourself to get that workout done.


Make it Doable

Don't feel like you have to do an hour-long workout every time you exercise.  If you only have time for a half-hour session, that's better than nothing!  Find a 30-minute YouTube video to do, jump on the treadmill for 30 minutes, or take a walk.   

Instead of doing 4-5 longer workouts a week, I aim to do 5-6 shorter workouts a week.  This works better for my schedule and I enjoy it more as well.

Schedule Your Workout

Using your calendar, whether it be digital or paper, look at your week.  Decide which days you will have time to workout and when and write it down.  When you pencil in that workout, you then are more likely to do it because you know you have the time.

Plan Ahead

In addition to putting your workout on your calendar, plan which workout you will do each day so that you're not questioning and being indecisive when it comes time.  If you are really having a hard time, choose a premade workout plan like apps such as  Beachbody on Demand provides or can be found on Pinterest.  


Dress for the Part

Are you planning to workout first thing in the morning?  Get up and put on your exercise clothes!  Going to workout after work?  As soon as you get home, change into your workout gear.  Being dressed for the part will remind you that exercise is the priority.

Multitask

Need to watch a training video for work?  Or dying to binge watch that new Netflix show?  Do it while you workout!  

For even more motivation, only allow yourself to watch that new favorite show WHILE you are working out. 


Remind Yourself How You'll Feel

If you're having a hard time despite the above tips, remind yourself how you feel after your workout versus how you feel if you don't.  

If you remind yourself that you will feel sluggish and guilty if you don't work out, but will be energized and clear-minded if you do, this will help you feel more motivated.


Just Do It

Like the famous sportswear company says, just do it.  Tell yourself that you will do at least 10 minutes.  Most likely, you will find that once you get started, you will continue past those 10 minutes and finish the workout.
